THE 34TH WORKSHOP ON MANAGING POTENTIAL CONFLICTS IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA

Indonesia has successfully hosted a series of events, namely the 34th Workshop on Managing Potential Conflicts in the South China Sea and the 20th Working Group Meeting on the Marine and Coastal Environment in the South China Sea, which took place on 17-18 September 2025,

The workshop was organized through the collaboration of Foreign Policy Strategy Agency (Badan Strategi Kebijakan Luar Negeri / BSKLN), the Geospatial Information Agency (Badan Informasi Geospasial / BIG), the Prof. Hasjim Djalal Center for Southeast Asian Studies and the Provincial Government of Bali.

In his opening remarks, the Acting Head of BSKLN, Ambassador Abdul Kadir Jailani, emphasized that parties in the South China Sea region need to prioritize dialogue and cooperation in facing current geopolitical dynamics. More than 67 maritime academics and practitioners from 7 participating parties, including Indonesia, the Republic of China, Philippines, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Chinese Taipei, exchanged views on best practices in coastal zone management and marine ecosystem cultivation.

Participants also had the opportunity to visit the Turtle Conservation and Education Center and the Kura-Kura Bali Special Economic Zone to study best practices in turtle conservation efforts and coastal area management in Indonesia. The activities concluded with a turtle release ceremony, affirming the participants’ commitment to preserving the increasingly vulnerable marine ecosystem.
